Stanley Rooster, full-time farmer and part-time detective, is approached by Katie Darby, a beautiful woman from a tiny town in western Oklahoma. Katie’s a waitress, a regular person, who has gotten a letter from billionaire Noah Velth. Strangely, the letter invites her to a private Caribbean island to hunt for gold. Stranger still, Velth, the letter’s purported author, was lost in a plane crash months before, and he was presumed dead.
Rooster advises the young woman not to go, feeling that the situation is so grotesque as to warrant evasion. But Katie Darby is a very poor person, one with few opportunities and more responsibilities than she can bear. Her dire financial situation impels her to take this weird chance. So Katie travels to the island. She meets the billionaire’s family. And she soon disappears.
Rooster goes looking for her. All the while he’s wondering: Why was Katie Darby targeted by Noah Velth? Is the billionaire somehow still alive? And, most importantly of all, what has become of Katie Darby?
