Los Diablos

Los Diablos: A crime and mystery novel
Cover design by David Murphy

A bildungsroman that deepens into a mystery, Los Diablos tells the story of Ricardo Muñoz Valdivia, his marriage to his wife Yésica, and his rise to power.

Handsome, polite, and industrious, Ricardo Valdivia is the diamond in the rough: a man from nothing and nowhere who’s physically and intellectually gifted.  But Ricardo’s paradoxical character leads him to crime.  In the 1970s, he gains control of the black markets of Guadalajara, Mexico. In the ensuing years, his business expands transnationally.  Though born into utter poverty, by the late 1980s Ricardo finds himself as the richest and most powerful kingpin in the West.

His cartel is known as Los Diablos.

Decades pass.  Meanwhile, his family grows and flourishes. But in the 2020s, a major misfortune strikes Los Diablos, leading to its sea change.  On the heels of this event, Don Valdivia comes to believe that someone has betrayed him.  Worse still, that someone may be a member of his own family.

To preserve himself and those around him, Don Valdivia searches for a traitor among those whom he respects and cares for most deeply.  Even as he looks, a rival gang sets out to assassinate him and destroy his empire.

Though constituted of a thrilling cartel war and a devious mole hunt, Los Diablos is more than a sensational penny dreadful.  Los Diablos is a novel that explores mankind’s equivocal and tragic nature.
